BRANSON, MO—January 2014 The harmonious voices of The Lettermen first hit the music charts in 1961 with the megahit, “The Way You Look Tonight.” The soft, romantic ballad shot to No. 13 on the Billboard chart. The group’s second single that year did even better. “When I Fall in Love” hit No. 7, establishing the trio as the most romantic singing group of the 1960s and they became one of the top college concert attractions of the decade.
The Lettermen have been recording and performing continuously for over Fifty years and will be appearing at 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, October 7 through 18 at The Andy Williams Moon River Theatre.
The current group consists of Tony Butala, the group’s founding original member, Donovan Tea, an accomplished singer and songwriter who has been an important member of the group for over thirty years, and Bobby Poynton, who first joined in 1989 and has recently returned.
The trio has produced more than 70 albums eighteen certified gold worldwide, four of them being “The Lettermen…And Live,” “Goin’ Out of My Head,” “Best of the Lettermen” and “Hurt So Bad.” Among the group’s more recent albums are “The Lettermen Greatest Movie Hits”, “The Lettermen Best Of Broadway” and “The Lettermen Live In The Philippines”.
The group has toured with George Burns, Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Bill Cosby. Butala estimates that they made over 200 appearances on television shows such as Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and on variety shows with Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin and others.
