Looking Back at Silver Dollar City’s Historic 2020 Expansion

Remember when Silver Dollar City stunned Branson with its biggest investment ever? Let’s take a look back at how the park transformed for its landmark Diamond Jubilee season.

Back in August 2019, Silver Dollar City made waves by announcing a massive $30 million investment spanning the fall harvest season, their award-winning Christmas festival, and the highly anticipated 2020 season. At the heart of that historic announcement was the debut of Mystic River Falls, a record-breaking water adventure that forever changed the park’s landscape.

Here is a look back at the grand plans that shaped one of the biggest eras in Silver Dollar City’s history:

Mystic River Falls & Rivertown

The crown jewel of the 2020 expansion was Mystic River Falls, a $23 million investment themed to the legend of Marvel Cave. The ride introduced incredible industry-first features, including:

  • The 82-foot Lift Tower: An open-air rotating elevator lift—the only one of its kind in the world—taking rafts over 8 stories high.

  • The Elevated River Channel: A suspended channel taking riders 66 feet high in the air for 180 linear feet.

  • The Grand Finale Drop: Featuring the tallest raft ride drop in the Western Hemisphere at 4.5 stories, leading into the wettest splashdown in park history.

The ride anchored Rivertown, a brand-new themed area celebrating the park’s 60th Diamond Jubilee anniversary. Alongside the ride opened the Rivertown Smokehouse, the largest dining investment in the company’s history, offering 450 seats and famous park BBQ along the banks of the Mystic River.

Fall Harvest Festival & Pumpkin Nights

The initial 2019 rollout brought a completely fresh concept to the park with Pumpkin Nights. The daytime and nighttime festival featured:

  • Over 8,000 illuminated and custom-carved pumpkins, including massive 4-story structural icons like giant cats, spiders, and owls.

  • Extended park hours with a nighttime black-light dance party.

  • The Canadian acrobatic lumberjack production show, Cirque Eloize, alongside a brand-new Makers’ Market featuring dozens of traditional crafters.

  • Fall-themed treats, including pumpkin-flavored churros, ice cream, glow-in-the-dark beverages, and classic caramel apples.

An Old Time Christmas

The holiday season of 2019 also received a major upgrade. Building on its reputation as one of the country’s top holiday destinations, Silver Dollar City introduced “Joy on Town Square”—a custom-engineered, 8-story animated Christmas tree blending color, music, and immersive special effects.

A Nod to History

All of these modern thrills trace back to a humble beginning: a hole in the ground. Marvel Cave was one of the Ozarks’ most popular show caves in the 1950s and 60s, prompting the Herschend family to build Silver Dollar City simply to entertain guests waiting for cave tours.

Mystic River Falls honored that legacy by weaving local history, Ozark culture, and the fictional tale of 1880s explorer Pearl Brazen into a modern theme park classic.

The Grand Opening Timeline & Engineering Marvels

The excitement for the Diamond Jubilee kicked off in March 2020 with the park’s seasonal opening, followed by a massive official Anniversary Celebration weekend on May 1, 2020, and the summer debut of Mystic River Falls.

While guests continued the tradition of taking daily tours through the historic Marvel Cave—stepping right back into the 1950s origins of the park—they could instantly look toward the future by tackling a record-breaking water adventure.

Mystic River Falls: By the Numbers

The construction of Mystic River Falls was an engineering feat on an unprecedented scale. Here is a look at the statistics behind the $23 million ride and its $4 million+ companion, the Rivertown Smokehouse:

  • The Record-Breaking Drop: A thrilling 45-foot (4.5 stories) drop—the tallest raft ride drop in the Western Hemisphere.

  • The Elevator Lift: Standing 82 feet tall, the custom 4-platform rotating elevator was built as the only one of its kind in the world to increase capacity and shorten wait times while offering incredible scenic views.

  • The Track & Channel: Features a 2,100-linear-foot channel (nearly half a mile), including an elevated section stretching over 6 stories tall and 180 linear feet long.

  • Water & Capacity: Pumped a maximum water flow of 200,000 gallons per minute across 18 eight-person rafts, making for a 5-minute and 30-second journey.

  • Requirements: Set with a minimum height requirement of 55 inches (or 40 to 55 inches with a supervising companion aged 16 or older).

  • The Build Partners: Designed and constructed by Silver Dollar City in partnership with R.E.S., Barr Engineering, and Herschend Family Entertainment Corporate Development.

Behind the Heavy Construction

The sheer scale of the 2020 project required massive infrastructure efforts behind the scenes:

  • Steel & Concrete: Required 22 semi-loads of rebar (totaling 1 million feet or 1.5 million pounds) and 6,950 cubic yards of concrete poured.

  • Materials: Utilized 222,000 board feet of heavy rough-sawn timber and roughly 6,000 tons of landscaping rocks.

  • Environmental Care: Guided by a strict commitment to nature, the park preserved the natural landscape by planting two or more trees for every one removed during construction.
