After more than three decades of racing through the Ozark Mountain terrain, Silver Dollar City has announced that one of its most cherished attractions, Thunderation, will be retired at the end of the 2026 season. The runaway mine train-style roller coaster’s final day of operation is scheduled for Jan. 2, 2027.
Since its debut in 1993, the Arrow Dynamics coaster has carried more than 27 million riders across more than 3,000 feet of track carved into the hillside. Widely regarded among roller coaster enthusiasts as one of the finest mine train coasters in the world, Thunderation has become a rite of passage for generations of families visiting the 1880s theme park.
But according to park lore, the ride’s retirement comes at the request of the Marvel Cave Mining Company, which originally ceased operations beneath the park in 1889. The fictional company is demanding the return of this section of the park to conduct geological surveys, insisting the tracks must be cleared for “good, honest work underground.”
“Thunderation has had its run,” said Foreman Jedidiah Campbell. “But this mountain was never meant to be borrowed forever. There are still undiscovered sections of that mine, and I intend to see what it holds. The work underground matters more than any cheer from above.”
Rather than simply closing the ride, Silver Dollar City plans to honor the coaster with a yearlong celebration throughout 2026. Beginning with an opening-day ceremony on March 13, guests can expect special ride moments, commemorative merchandise, promotional offers, and limited-time experiences leading up to the final sendoff.
For many locals, the news carries deep sentimental value. As one Facebook user reflected, “This ride made my insides bleed. It’s a rite of passage for people of the Ozarks. Survive Thunderation, and become a man.”
While park officials confirm the coaster has become a true City treasure, the call of the mine — and whatever lies undiscovered beneath the mountain — has finally won out. The 2026 season will offer fans one last chance to experience the thunder before the tracks go silent.
