“Oh What A Night!” could be called “Oh What A Show!”

The Branson cast of "Oh What A Night" during a recent performance.

Branson’s newest show, “Oh What A Night! A Musical Tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons,” opened at the Andy Williams Moon River Theatre this week adding to the breadth of the live music shows Branson offers and another reason why people refer to Branson as “The live music show capital of the world.” As would be expected in a tribute show about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the show was filled with their hits. What makes this show such a great entertainment experience however, is the unexpected.

First the expected. From the opening number, the 1975 Four Seasons hit, “Oh What A Night,” to its reprise in the finale, the four man cast of Chris Anderson, Taylor Campbell, Jonathan Harvey and Christian Nielsen sang hit after hit of the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli. From big hits such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Dawn,” “Grease” and “Walk Like A Man;” lesser known songs such as “Silence Is Golden and “My Eyes Adored You” and “oh,” so many others, whether a featured solo or the whole group, the quality of their vocals was outstanding. Two of my personal favorite were the “Silence is Golden” and “My Eyes Adored You” because of the outstanding way they were presented and, in the case of  “My Eyes Adored You,” the memories it brought back.

What was unexpected was the fun associated with this show as it transitions from one timeless hit to another. The choreography involved with every piece communicates an energy through their performance to the audience and there is never a dull moment when it is combined with just the right amount of humor and audience interaction between numbers to make the shows 90 minutes, with a 15 minute break, just fly by. I particularly appreciated the background about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that was seamlessly woven into the production. For example, “Do you know how the “Four Seasons” got their name? The answer will just bowl you over.”

A great example of the “unexpected” is the segment where Chris sings Frankie’s first solo hit “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” The artful way the segment was set up, the great job Chris does on the song and the way the rest of the group interacts with the solo performance is, but one example of why “Oh What A Night!” is such a great fun filled entertainment experience.

Michael Chapman, the shows director, pointed out that there is absolutely no lip syncing and that the Branson “debut cast” is one of multiple casts performing the show at various other locations. “Oh What A Night! A Musical Tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons,” will be performing in Branson through October 22.
